Faith in the Community Awards in Partnership with Bexley Council

On the 15th November 2018 more than 200 local people of different faiths were invited to special awards evening at the Civic Offices in Bexleyheath to celebrate the hard work and achievements of the borough’s faith groups.

The HM Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London Sir Kenneth Olisa was among those presenting awards, along with Bexley Members of Parliament Sir David Evennett MP, James Brokenshire MP and Teresa Pearce MP.

They were joined by the borough’s deputy lieutenant major David Hewer, the mayor of Bexley Councillor Brian Bishop and the leader of the council cllr Teresa O’Neill.

Local faith groups and members of the public were invited earlier in the year to nominate projects that seek to make a difference and help others in their local communities.

The 52 projects – ranging from foodbanks and community cafés to education and sports groups – were nominated for the seven award categories.

All the entries were adjudicated by an independent panel and the following seven winners were announced on the evening:

Outstanding Individual – Bhaven Pathak

Cohesive Communities – Women Together

Successful Communities – Blue Sky Citadel

Helping Others in the World – Mrs Joyce Smally and the Knitting Group

Outstanding Team – Salvation Army

Healthy Communities – Guru Hargobind Sports Club

Supportive Communities – Evergreen Care Bexley

The awards ceremony closed with Bexley’s cabinet member for communities cllr Alex Sawyer reflecting on the achievements of all the winners and nominees.

He said: “The stories that we have heard tonight give us just some insight into the scale of the activity happening across the borough to help our communities thrive.“

They are living testament to how faith groups doitforbexley every day. Thank you for all that you do to create a stronger, more connected community.”

The Faith in the Community Awards were created by the Bexley Interfaith Forum, with support from the council.The awards took place during the UK’s Inter Faith Week (November 11 – 18), which aims to strengthen good interfaith relations, increase awareness of the different faith communities in the UK and increase understanding between people of religious and non-religious beliefs.
